What follows is not professional legal advice. While we will do our best to regularly update this information, what you find on this page should be considered previously compiled information that is potentially out-of-date. If you have any questions, please refer to the State of Michigan's official instructions for applying for a CPL, a link to which has been provided for your convenience (and may also be out of date) just below this text.

Official State of MI Instructions

Concealed Pistol License

In the state of Michigan, a CPL permits a holder/licensee to carry concealed one of two items, which are both capable of lethal and non-lethal outcomes. While so-called "open carry" of a pistol is legal under certain circumstances, it is fairly restricted in public spaces in the State of Michigan without a CPL. Licensees are held to a much higher standard under the law, and as a result statistically commit significantly fewer crimes (by an order of magnitude) than the general population.

Where a CPL holder may not carry concealed

"Prohibited Premises"

"Prohibited Premises" does not include parking areas of the places identified below. (MCL 28.425o)

  • A hospital.

Miscellaneous Rules While Carrying (and not)

A CPL holder must inform an officer whether he or she is carrying if when stopped or questioned

The officer will know regardless after an ID is run. Failure to inform the officer can result in an immediate suspension of the CPL, even if the holder was not carrying at the time.

A CPL holder may not refuse to be identified or field drug tested

Refusing can result in an immediate suspension of the CPL.

A CPL holder must consider proportionality when using deadly force

Failure to do so can and does result in homicide convictions.

A CPL holder must carry the physical CPL license while carrying concealed

Unlike forgetting one's driver license at home, forgetting a CPL can result in immediate suspension.
