In the state of Michigan, a CPL permits a holder/licensee to carry concealed one of two items, which are both capable of lethal and non-lethal outcomes. While so-called "open carry" of a pistol is legal under certain circumstances, it is fairly restricted in public spaces in the State of Michigan without a CPL. Licensees are held to a much higher standard under the law, and as a result statistically commit significantly fewer crimes (by an order of magnitude) than the general population.
It is irresponsible to carry a weapon and not know how to use it.
A day-long course that involves learning situational awareness, legality of self-defense scenarios, rules of being a licensee, and range time proving minimum proficiency.

The following are locations, in which an actively concealed-carrying CPL holder is not permitted to enter, unless he or she meets certain criteria which involves either being/having been employed in law enforcement, or employed in a security capacity. "Prohibited Premises" does not include parking areas of the places identified below. (MCL 28.425o)

Refusing can result in an immediate suspension of the CPL.
Failure to do so can and does result in homicide convictions.
Unlike forgetting one's driver license at home, forgetting a CPL can result in immediate suspension.
